Small Grants Program for Local and Regional Outreach

The SSE Education and Outreach Committee is now accepting proposals for the Small Grants Program for Local and Regional Outreach Promoting the Understanding of Evolutionary Biology

These grants provide support for local and regional educational outreach activities to take place during 2023. Examples of past outreach activities have included public lectures, exhibits, student competitions, and professional development events for teachers.

Grants of up to $1000 USD will be awarded. Applicants must be members of SSE. The deadline to apply is April 24, 2023

Are you developing an interesting educational project, resource, or activity? Consider applying for the T. H. Huxley Award, which recognizes and promotes the development of high quality evolution education resources. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are especially encouraged to apply.

The recipient will receive funding to attend and present their evolution education resources at the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) annual conference, held this year in Indianapolis, IN, USA on November 10-13, 2022. Awardees may present at an alternative education-focused conference with approval from the Education and Outreach Committee. You must be an SSE member to apply. The Teachers Researching Evolution program, run by BEACON Education and Outreach and supported by the SSE Education and Outreach Committee with funds from Wiley Publishers, will provide support for three teachers this summer. Evolution Film Festival: Deadline May 31

After a one-year hiatus, the Evolution Video Contest/Film Festival is back! The organizers took a year off last year for the Joint Congress on Evolutionary Biology, but are excited to bring the 8th Annual Evolution Video Contest/Film Festival to this year’s Evolution Conference in Providence, RI on June 21-25.  Start working on your video now, because the deadline to submit is May 31st, 2019 (11:59 PM, EST). Host a teacher in your lab this summer!

The SSE Education and Outreach Committee is launching a new program to place teachers in research labs for part of the summer, and we need society members like you to host teachers! Scientists in host labs are asked to work with the teacher to engage them in some aspect of a research project for 4-8 weeks. This program will give teachers funded, hands-on experiences that they can then take back to their classrooms. Continue reading to learn more about the program and how to get involved!

The Darwin Day Roadshow is a way for scientists and educators to share their enthusiasm for evolutionary science with students, teachers and the general public across the United States in the spring each year, to celebrate Charles Darwin’s birthday (February 12th).
